Did you know only 5% of NSW children eat enough vegetables?

Murrumbidgee Local Health District congratulates Primary Schools in the Riverina for encouraging local school children in their quest to crunch more vegies in the NSW Health funded initiative: The Big Veggie Crunch: Thursday March 31 at 10am.

Hosted during Vegetable Week, 28 March through to April1, the annual Big Vegie Crunch event is funded by NSW Health, and is an attempt by NSW primary school students to create an un-beet-able record for the highest number of children eating vegetables simultaneously.

The Big Veggie Crunch is firmly planted to be un-be-leaf-able success with over 35 primary schools in Riverina and 2694 primary school students registered to crunch on a veggie, Thursday 31 March at 10am.

“Lettuce encourage more schools to register and be a part of this fantastic event,” says MLHD Health Promotion Coordinator, Brendan Pearson.

“Veggie week aims to garnish kids’ excitement about veggies, hosting a range of resources and fun educational activities designed to increase positive attitudes and enthusiasm towards eating vegetables,” says Brendan.

“By increasing children’s knowledge about vegetables, and exposure to them, the initiative aims to encourage healthy eating habits which will carry into adulthood.”

“Children will learn things like how bees help with pollination and about the whole lifecycle of plants, so how any food waste from plants can be put back into compost to support the growth of new plants.”.

“From Hay, to Gundagai, Albury to Illabo, schools across the region are crunching on board! It’s great to see so many schools and students embracing the week and digesting the message about eating more vegetables.”
