Cleaning Up The Hawkesbury

Clean Up Day

Between 20 and 30 volunteers turned up to help clean up Deerubbin Park over the weekend. South Windsor resident Ann Brita Nilsson, accompanied by her 4-year-old daughter Avalon, were among the helpers.

“It was a real success, but we need a lot more help,” Ms Nilsson said. “Some of it we’re going to have to leave because it needs bigger moving equipment.”

The aim of the day was to clean up the front of the park, but the volunteers managed to make a huge dent in the back end as well. Ms Nilsson said there was a lot of stuff, some from the floods and some from random dumping.

“The dumped stuff was obvious,” she said.

“It costs a lot of money to dump stuff at the local dump. I get that it costs money to run a dump, but we need a way to encourage the right behaviour.”

Among the items collected in the cleaning were two 40 litre oil drums, tractor tyres, black tubing, rolls of green mesh, timber, good quality pallets and foam boxes.

The mayor rolled up his sleeves and volunteered his time to help clean up the park as well. It is always good to see community leaders leading by example in situations like these.

The event was a partnership between Council and Clean Up Australia Day, supported by OzFish Unlimited.

Together they aimed to clean up Deerubbin Park in Windsor, McGraths Hill’s Colbee Park, Argyle Bailey Memorial Park in Ebenezer and Glenroie’s Cattai Creek.
