Young musicians gathered recently at the Conservatorium High School for the Young Mannheim Symphonists 2023 NSW Intensive, with a spectacular public concert as the finale.

The Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra held its latest youth orchestra course as part of its popular Young Mannheim Symphonists.

This five-day music fest – held at the Conservatorium High School in Sydney – culminated in a splendid celebratory concert.

There were 32 music students aged between 12 and 23 years of age, from conservatoriums and universities in Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne, as well as metropolitan and regional NSW schools, in attendance, along with 11 professional specialist tutors, and the final public concert featured repertoire they had prepared throughout the week.

Participants included students from Baulkham Hills, Belfield, Carlingford, Chatswood, Cheltenham, Concord West, Croydon, Eagle Vale, East Ryde, Epping, Florey, Hornsby, Katoomba, Little Hartley, Manly, Narmburn, Oatley, Pennant Hills, Silverwater, South Turramurra, Springwood, Strathfield South, Thornleigh, Turramurra, Wahroonga and Wilberforce.

The youth orchestra was conducted from the violin by Rachael Beesley and explored masterpieces by Beethoven, Mozart, Elgar, CPE Bach and lesser-known composers Stamitz and Reicha. Co-directed by Beesley and Nicole van Bruggen, the Young Mannheim Symphonists youth orchestra program gives students and emerging artists a chance to experience first-hand the excitement of discovering music through the lens of historical performance style (HIP).

At the same time, the program nurtures HIP musicians for the future.

Each year, the Young Mannheim Symphonists explore music from the Classical and Romantic periods, bringing it to life under the guidance of professional musicians experienced in historically informed performance.

Exposed to this extraordinary wealth of knowledge and insight, the participants are empowered to begin making their own informed musical decisions

The NSW Intensive tutors are musicians from the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra, whose passion for understanding our musical heritage in its historical context is matched by their passion for inspiring and enlightening the next generation of HIP musicians.
