St John of God Health Care will hand over operations of Hawkesbury District Health Service to Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District when the current contract expires at the end of next month.

The NSW Government announced yesterday that parking would remain free for patients, staff and visitors at Hawkesbury Hospital.

Health Minister Ryan Park said the commitment provided certainty for the Hawkesbury community when the NSW Government assumes responsibility for the provision of healthcare at the hospital.

“We know trips to the hospital can be a challenging time for patients and their families, and this assurance of ongoing free parking will be a welcome relief for the local community,” Mr Park said.

“There is access to free parking under the current operator of the hospital, St John of God Health Care, and that won’t change.

“This decision follows our previous announcement of free parking for patients, visitors and staff at hospitals and health facilities across regional NSW.”

Minister Park said service provided by SJGHC are now transitioning to Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District.

Labor Hawkesbury spokesperson and Member of the Legislative Council Peter Primrose said the announcement would be welcomed by the local community.

“I’ve passed on the concerns of a number of locals regarding the transfer of Hawkesbury Hospital and I’m proud to be part of a government that listens and acts,” Mr Primrose said.

“I’m really pleased the continuation of free parking at Hawkesbury Hospital will ensure there’s no added financial burden on patients, visitors and staff.”

It is expected the transition of Hawkesbury Hospital to the NSW Government will be completed by June 30, 2024.

“I want to assure the community the hospital will remain open throughout the entirety of the transition period,” Mr Park said.

“This will include its 24-hour emergency department, operating theatres, community health services and outpatients’ clinics.

“Public patient appointments and clinic hours will also not be impacted.”
