Total Appliance Repair Centre shares some tips for removing transit bolts from your brand-new washing machine.

Buying a new washing machine?

Make sure you remove the packing bolt (or transit bolts) before using your new machine.

Using a new washing machine without removing these bolts can lead to serious damage to the machine and cause potential safety hazards.

Transit bolts are designed to secure the drum during transportation, preventing it from moving around and getting damaged.

Specific details may vary from model to model, so check your instructions, but the general steps to follow are below:

  • Unplug the machine (something you should do before performing an maintenance on your washing machine);
  • Locate the transit bolts - usually found at the back of the machine, near the drum. There may be several bolts to remove, typically 3 to 4. You may need a socket wrench or pliers to remove the bolts, as they are usually tightened securely.
  • Carefully loosen and remove each transit bolt. Keep the bolts in a safe place in case you need to reinstall them for transporting.
  • Store the transit bolts in a safe place for future use or dispose of them properly.
  • Check for accessories. Some machines come with plastic caps or plugs that need to be inserted into the bolt holes once the transit bolts are removed.
  • Your washing machine should be ready for safe and effective use.
