Can you afford 20 minutes to be physically active each day and protect yourself more fully against COVID?

As little as 20 minutes of physical activity each day offers the best protection against COVID.

New research by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, a peer-reviewed analysis of 16 global studies that included more than 1.8 million adults, revealed that regular physical activity can help lower the risk of contracting the virus or developing severe disease.

The analysis found that 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous, physical activity a week offered the best protection.

Our bodies were designed to move - fact.

Simply moving our bodies - exercise - has numerous advantages such as boosting immunity, reducing the negative effects of stress, weight management, pain management and anti-inflammatory responses.

Those of us that grumble about the need to do physical activity usually just haven’t found the right activity for us.

Increasing cardio and muscle fitness is particularly important, according to the study.

Those involved in the study who included regular physical activity each week lowered their risk of:

  • Infection with Sars-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID, by 11 per cent;
  • Being admitted to hospital by 36 per cent;
  • Severe COVI-19 illness by 44 per cent; and

Exercising also resulted in a 43 per cent lower risk of death from COVId-19 than inactive participants.

Perhaps we all need to make an effort to find some physical movement that we enjoy.
