NSW SES will be using a new three-tiered warning system by the end of the month.

With a third La Nina weather event forecasted for Autumn and Summer, Hawkesbury residents and businesses need to begin preparations for more flooding.

NSW SES has announced that they will be using a new warning system at the end of September, so it is important for local residents to become familiar with that new system, particularly those in the Hawkesbury, Colo and Macdonald Valleys.

Talk to your family, friends and work colleagues about what you will do if and when you receive a warning.

The SES will issue warnings via the new Australian Warning System (AWS), a national three-tiered warning framework that will cover all emergency services organisations across all hazards.

The three levels in the AWS are:

  • Advice;
  • Watch and Act; and
  • Emergency Warning.

Each level of warning has a series of clear action statements to guide the community.

Example statements include - ‘stay informed’, ‘prepare to evacuate’ and ‘move to higher ground’.

Warnings will continue to be distributed through the NSW SES website, NSW SES social media channels and local ABC radio.

You can learn more about the new warning system at www.ses.nsw.gov.au/warnings.
