TAFE NSW’s new virtual course, Certificate IV in Entrepreneurship and Small Business, equips new business owners with the skills they need to succeed.

One hundred Landscape Construction, Horticulture and Nursery students from TAFE NSW have brought to life a community gardens themed display at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

As more families in Western Sydney make the shift towards high-density living, community gardens are surging in popularity; providing opportunities to form connections and enhance mental and physical wellbeing.

Demand for landscapers and horticulturalists is also set to increase 13.5 per cent over the next five years.

The focus of the Community Gardens display is to provide a welcoming space for show visitors to relax, connect with nature, and learn about the diverse educational pathways offered by TAFE NSW.

TAFE NSW Padstow student Thanh Ngyuen is one of the Certificate III in Horticulture students who has been hard at work arranging the wide variety of flowers, fruits and herbs which form the garden.

“Building the TAFE NSW community garden display has been a really exciting opportunity to put into practice the design principles we’ve been learning as part of the cours.

“It has also been great to observe how different plants complement each other.

“My personal favourites in this year’s display are the strawberry wall, bush tucker garden and sensory garden.

“Better still, all the plants we used were propagated by the students,” Ms Ngyuen said.

TAFE NSW Horticulture Head teacher Tony Momi has been collaborating with the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW for 15 years to provide students with this real-world experience.

“For the students involved in creating these innovative displays, the Sydney Royal Easter Show provides an invaluable opportunity to showcase their talent and skills, while also growing their confidence.

“The Community Gardens is a collaboration between TAFE NSW Padstow, Ryde and Richmond campuses.

“It displays both the future of urban green spaces and the industry-ready skills these students are honing for exciting careers in horticulture and landscape design.

“It’s truly rewarding to be involved,” Tony said.

Locals looking to spruce up their gardens, TAFE NSW Padstow is hosting its bi-annual nursery sale on May 28 and 30.

Discounted plants propagated by students will be on sale to the public.
