Libby Hyett receives the Highly Commended Hawkesbury resident prize at the 2023 Hawkesbury Art Prize.

With close to 200 attendees, they just about stood shoulder to shoulder to get a gander at the exceptional entries to this year’s Hawkesbury Art Prize opening and awards night held on Saturday, September 2 at the Purple Noon Gallery.

The overall winner for the year was Queensland’s Katherine Barry and two highly commended prizes were awarded to South Australia’s Suzie Riley and Carmie Lyons from New South Wales.

Suzie Riley also took home the Packers Prize.

Libby Hyett was awarded the Highly Commended Hawkesbury resident prize. Four commended recognition prizes were also awarded to Catherine Parker from Queensland, Victoria’s Joe Blundell and James Lai and Meg Walters both from New South Wales.

This year’s judges included Linda Gregoriou, Julie Brackenreg, and Angus Fisher.

Their job was to go through the more than 500 entries and judge which were worthy of the prestigious awards on offer.

Events like these don’t happen without a lot of behind-the-scenes work from organising committees and volunteers.

An exhibition of the finalists will remain hanging in Purple Noon Gallery until September 18.

For those who can’t physically make it into the gallery, you can view the works at www.hawkesbury.artprize.com.au.
