Harmony Day celebrates community diversity, encouraging acceptance and respect.

Harmony Week is celebrated within the community, schools and businesses, taking place from March 15 to 21.

‘Everyone Belongs’ is the message, and the initiative is centered around the concept of celebrating cultural diversity, building unity, breaking down barriers and growing inclusive communities. Sports, music, entertainment and food are all wonderful ways to experience and celebrate different cultures, and to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together. This Friday, Windsor Public School is leading the way for Harmony Week.

“Windsor Public School has an inclusive culture, where the school community has a strong sense of belonging,” said school Principal Mr Mike Watson.

“The school celebrates our cultural diversity each year during Harmony Week through arranging cultural performers to lead our students in traditional dance or music.

“We have also held our own ‘world tours’ amongst classes where a cultural study has been implemented through project-based learning and Students have also learnt sports, dance and craft activities from selected countries.”

This year the school will be hosting a K-6 interactive African Drumming workshop and encouraging the students to wear traditional outfits representing their individual cultural backgrounds.

All the staff are involved in the celebrations, however a committee with representatives from Stage 1 to Stage 3 initiate the planning each year.

“Our school Welfare Policy promotes tolerance and acceptance of others and our curriculum reinforces inclusivity of cultures,” explains Mr Watson.

“Harmony Day is seen as an opportunity to reinforce respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.”
