International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated globally on Monday. The annual movement brings attention to the roles of women, as well as being a day to join voices with people around the world and call for equal rights.

This year’s IWD theme was ‘Choose to Challenge’ and centred around the concept of how challenging negative experiences leads to positive change. These include gender stereotypes, inequality, violence against women and women’s social roles.

Sarah Cassim from the Hawkesbury Women In Business Network (HWIB) said IWD is a chance for women to share their stories.

“Sharing stories helps us all work toward equality,” Ms Cassim said. “It’s a fabulous time to give a voice to others. By sharing our stories we can inspire others.”

Ms Cassim said the network builds the confidence and wellbeing of its members which then encourages change in the community.

“It’s always a pleasure to see what we can achieve when we come together. It does take a village,” she said.

Hawkesbury Women in Business (HWIB) and Penrith/Blue Mountains Ladies in Business presented an IWD networking and motivational event with five female guests speaker; Kylie King, Kristy Moore, Rozzie Chia, Desiree Taylor and Sarah Sydir for women if the Hawkesbury.

Similarly The Women’s Cottage, an organisation run for women and children by women, is founded on the principles of feminism and equality for women of all ages, races, religions and sexual preferences. The organisation takes the initiative to make every day empowering for women.

The Girl Collective also advocates for the success and empowerment of women by providing a platform for women to connect with one another in their entrepreneurship or businesses and to build an inclusive connected community.
